Title

City Social Center for Transient Men

Description

This is an image of the City Social Center for Transient Men located at 58 Commerce Avenue SW. The City Social Center provided food and housing for transient young men who had registered with the City. A Grand Rapids Press article (Jan.1, 1930) stated that the Center housed 105 unmarried men at night, and fed more than 600 people daily. Thomas J. Majchrzak was the Welfare Superintendent of the Center at that time.

The building was first known as the Holland Reformed Church, later as the Spring Avenue True Dutch Reformed Church, and still later as the Commerce Avenue Christian Reformed Church. Circa 1912, the church congregation moved and the building was converted into a parking garage. Note the building entrance has been widened to allow for automobile entrance.
