The photograph depicts a mountain of chopped wood, with men on the pile stacking wood. Men at ground level are chopping wood. The wood was distributed to the needy through the City Welfare Dept.
The photo looks north into the city center. The bleachers from Island Park are still visible in the background, so that puts this before December 1, 1934, when they were removed to Valley Field on the West Side.
A sign on a nearby building advertises "Grand Rapids Brooms", and another Clue Valley Creamery Co." which was located at 225-227 Market Avenue SW between Finney and Williams.
