Description
The photograph depicts two men standing in a depression in Belknap Memorial Park, aka Belknap Park.
Formerly Reservoir Park, the park's name was officially changed to Belknap Memorial Park on May 18, 1931, to honor the late Capt. Charles E. Belknap. (Grand Rapids Press, 19 May 1931, p. 10.) Belknap Park was described as a 34-acre tract at the north end of Livingston Avenue NE and Fairview Avenue NE, on the high bluffs overlooking US131 (Division Avenue) and Ionia Avenue NW. While these photos are from the early 1930s scrip labor program, work on the park continued through 1939-1941 with WPA labor.
