Description

A scrip labor crew replaces a curb on North Division Avenue just north of Lyon Street NE. The photographer is facing south.

The building on the immediate left is the Periodical Publishing Company, at 200-204 N. Division Avenue. South of Lyon is a rooming house, Dirk Rypstra’s Auto Parking, and the Dickinson Press. Above the Dickinson building, the steeple for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is visible.

The tall building at the center of the photo was the Division Avenue side of the Manufacturer’s Building on Ionia Avenue NW. This building later housed Lear-Siegler, and even later was Grand Rapids Junior College’s West Building. In 2022, the building was the home of Kendall College of Art & Design.

The building at the immediate right of the photo is the loading dock side of the U.S. Post Office and Federal Building. This building was later converted to house the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and, still later, Ferris State University’s Kendall College of Art & Design.
