Title
City Social Center Dining and Sleeping Facilities
Subject
Description
The photo depicts the dining and sleeping facilities at the City Social Center, located at 58 Commerce Ave. SW. This photo was taken from the former church choir loft. A Christmas tree with garland decorates the dining space.
The dining tables and benches are full. Men from all walks of life and all ages are seated eating, while others are seated or standing while waiting for the next available table vacancy. Waiters / servers are stationed at each table. While the men are predominantly white, there are at least five African American men in the photo. A radio stands against the wall.
Bunk beds with mattresses share the same space as the diners; luggage, men's hats, clothing and reading materials are visible.
In the far corner is a wooden partitioned area which is plumbed, and from which towels are hanging - likely a shower room. Sinks, some with mirrors above, ring that space.
